Back before the holidays I stopped in at Sephora and could not leave empty handed. I walked through every aisle, color swatched plenty of concealers and foundations, smelled every perfume on the counter and perused the brushes and makeup accessories. Many of the brands had just released their holiday sets and I couldn’t decide what I needed more. I ended up leaving with the Josie Maran Whimsical Wonder Box. I meant to post this back in November, but since then I have tried all the products much more. Before trying this set, I was not particularly familiar with Josie Maran products. Some of the items I am so glad to have tried, others I was left feeling lukewarm. Here are my thoughts on the products in the Josie Maran Whimsical Wonders holiday set.
The Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Eye Shadow in Beach Sand
this shadow is a beautiful metallic brown. I had looked at it before and passed it up, and I am so glad I gave it a second chance! It has great staying power, especially when paired with an eye primer, and is highly pigmented. I know there is a difference between pigmentation when you mix up the bottle and when you don’t, but I have always mixed it up. I’m not sure what it looks like when left separated. The first time I used this, I noticed about midday that this shadow did start to settle into the creases of my eyelids. With a primer though that almost never happens. This is a quick drying liquid, so make sure to blend it out quickly.
The Josie Maran Argan Oil Light
I’m just going to come out and say that the Josie Maran Argan Oil Light is not my favorite. I have a small bottle of the regular argan oil, and I would prefer that over the Light version any day. I couldn’t figure out an appropriate instance to use this product. It sat on my skin without soaking in and made me look really oily. When I tried to use it in my hair I looked like I hadn’t washed my hair in a month. I might’ve used too much, but I was trying to use it sparingly. Apparently I wasn’t. This product just isn’t for me.
The Josie Maran Enlightenment Illuminizer
A little goes a long way with the Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer, but the pump is obstinate. I hard as I tried to pump the tiniest bit, this little pump insists on providing enough to cover my face. Besides the packaging, I do enjoy this product. It creates a nice subtle golden glow without giving too much shimmer. I’m not sure how long the sample size will last, but at this point, I would certainly consider a larger size. It blends into my skin well and doesn’t clog my pores.
The Josie Maran Black Oil Mascara
I could take or leave the Black Oil mascara. I did like how thickening this mascara was on my lashes when I used it as a second coat after applying a waterproof layer. I felt this mascara built up very well without lots of clumping, but I did notice flaking throughout the day sometimes. I was testing this out while Seattle was in the middle of a few weeks of endless rain, but I don’t think the humidity played a factor in the flaking.
The Josie Maran Coconut Water Cheek Gelee
I want to like the Josie Maran Coconut Water Cheek Gelee so much, but I can barely get to the product because it’s in a teeny tiny little pot! Were these products packages made for kids? I love the color of the gelee, I’ve used it on my cheeks and lips, and it deposits great pigment and lasting color. So far I’ve only used my fingers and I’ve noticed the color stays a while on my hands too. Oops. The pot is too small to use a regular brush though, so I’m a bit limited on other options. I don’t usually like creamy or watery products on my cheeks after putting on foundation, but I found I really liked using this blush tint.
Overall, the Josie Maran Whimsical Wonders box was a lot of fun and it was a great way to familiarize myself with the brand!
